NEAR is a user-friendly Layer 1 blockchain designed for scalability and usability, featuring sharding (Nightshade) and human-readable account names.
Nightshade splits NEAR's state and transaction processing across parallel shards. Nightshade 2.0 added stateless validation, so validators fetch the data they need from the network instead of storing each shard's full state.
Chain Signatures use multi-party computation (MPC) so that a NEAR account or smart contract can sign transactions on other blockchains, such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, without a traditional bridge.
